Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth

My Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Loved this — although not quite as much as the first installation, but it was still an intense, unique read that held me captive, yet again!
Insurgent: Noun. A person who acts in opposition to the established authority, who is not necessarily regarded as a belligerent.

Insurgent picks up directly where Divergent leaves off—gaining an immediate burst of momentum. The tone has changed a bit as the characters now face a somber and unsteady aftermath that eventually snowballs into pandemonium. Many will question where they belong, who they should trust, and where their own loyalties lie.

“People, I have discovered, are layers and layers of secrets. You believe you know them, that you understand them, but their motives are always hidden from you, buried in their own hearts. You will never know them, but sometimes you decide to trust them.”

Some readers seem to have struggled with the shift in Tris’ character, but I actually found it genuinely fitting and believable. In the midst of tragedy, betrayal, and despair; insurmountable guilt and self-doubt—she maintains her bravery and remains faithful to the greater good. I found her character inspiring, and a few warranted tears and short-lived breakdowns certainly hasn’t tarnished my regard of her.

The relationship between Tris and Four struggled and intensified with a simultaneous flow. They are faced with numerous setbacks and heartbreaking circumstances, but their connection somehow remains solid. We are given a deeper look into their lives as many life-altering secrets are revealed.

If anything fell slightly short this time around, I’d say it was the execution. Yes, the writing was just as engaging and interesting, but there was so much going on at times that some of the details became a little hazy. Although the story remained in a constant state of raw intensity, nothing concrete really happened until the very end. It sometimes felt like an endless amount of meticulous build-up with no resolve in sight. However, the tremendous build-up remained engrossing, and the fulfilling ending made it completely worth the wait.

I may be in the minority when I say this, but I LOVED the ending! It offered the perfect ratio of resolve and wonder. Questions are answered, but new ones arise, and it sets the intriguing groundwork for what I’m certain will be an unforgettable finale!
