Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee

My Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

Hard to focus on reality again after that one…
The enormous hype surrounding this book, in my opinion, is genuinely warranted. We are given a unique and creative plot with plenty of action, suspense, gore, and just enough of an underlying romance to keep everyone happy. The writing is spectacular and the scenes were playing out before my eyes whether I wanted them to or not. The story is gripping and fluid, feeling much shorter than it actually was–which is a sure sign of a great read!

Life as Penryn once knew it is over as she now faces the dire circumstances of a post apocalyptic world. The New World: Where refugees and raid gangs steal the daylight and terrifying creatures torment the night. It’s angels versus humans, with danger lurking everywhere and everyone is out for their own survival.

When Penryn crosses paths with the mysterious angel, Raffe, the lines separating angels and humans begin to blur. Suddenly, it’s not so apparent which ‘side’ Penyrn is fighting for, and the rules hanging over their heads risk betrayal as they enter forbidden territory.

Penryn is a strong and selfless heroine who’s just out to save her family yet finds herself slowly falling for the “enemy”. The romance in this story is more of a foundation of what will become … but intense just the same. I loved the sarcastic, dry humor Raffe possessed, and found it nice to be able to laugh throughout some of the peril. The connection between Penryn and Raffe was subtle yet powerful, and I look forward to seeing what becomes of it.

The final twenty percent of this book is straight action and gore—which is typically not a favorite of mine but I was so invested in this story that I couldn’t seem to get enough; It was the perfect change of pace. The ending does offer some resolve to hold us over, but has also opened up many new beginnings that will no doubt make for a fantastic sequel!
