My Rating: 5 of 5 stars
Books like The Sweet Gum Tree are why I love to read. Filled with beauty, symbolism, heartache, forgiveness, redemption, and an undying love all around—this ultimate love story turned out to be one of the greatest books I’ve ever read!
Since the synopsis for this book is generous and intriguing enough, I don’t feel a summation of the story here is necessary. But I will say that each and and every one of these characters had been broken and slowly redeemed and held a special place in my heart throughout this extraordinary book. I enjoyed being present during Nick and Alix’s transition from childhood to adulthood. It was such an incredible way to build a palpable connection and understanding for the characters.
I love reading books with references to the finer things in life. I was mesmerized by the descriptions of nature and its comparison to humanity. Nick was Alix’s “sweet gum tree”, and his love stood deeply rooted in Alix’s life no matter how the storms threatened to rip them apart.
Although this story was heartbreaking throughout, it didn’t remain tragic or leave me feeling depleted. The heartache actually intensified its sweetness instead of reducing it. What I loved most about this story was its example that true love is strong enough to forgive and withstand any element that threatens to break it. Most of the time, the choices we make in life deeply affect our future…but some of life’s downfalls are completely out of our hands. We have to allow ourselves the time to grieve in order to properly heal so we can, eventually, be able to live again.
